One night. $2 million. Cash bar. Hors d'oeuvres. No press.
The first major fundraiser of Gov. Bill Richardson's presidential exploratory campaign took place Thursday night at Sandia Resort, and the campaign trumpeted it as a record-setter before it started.

"We will raise ... $2 million, which is more than any other political event has raised in the history of New Mexico," Richardson deputy campaign manager Amanda Cooper said of the gathering of an estimated 700-plus donors from around New Mexico.

Is Progress with North Korea Bad for Bill?

One of Richardson's biggest selling points for being President has always been his diplomatic skills and experiences. And nothing reinforced this image to the nation better than his visits from the North Koreans over the last 4 years to visit the Governor in New Mexico.

When things between the U.S. and the North seemed to be at their worst, Richardson seemed to be at his best, reminding the nation that  scary situations don't have to be made worse by politicians when it comes to international affairs and real weapons of mass destruction.

In fact, prior to the announcement of this deal, I half expected the Richardson campaign to use the candidates' diplomatic experience to say "Richardson is the only guy who can solve the crisis on the Korean peninsula," as a major selling point. Which begs the question, is the announcement of a negotiated agreement with North Korea bad for Bill Richardson's presidential campaign?

AstroTurf Politics

I was no Deaniac in 2004, but I was impressed by the genuine surge of participation that his campaign evoked. Maybe that's why I've been so skeptical of every subsequent candidate's attempt to tap into the "netroots." Often, these efforts seem contrived attempts to demonstrate "grassroots" support.

The Governor's campaign has received a lot of good press recently regarding his "netroots" across the nation. For this reason, I think its important that you be familiar with the term, Astroturf, in a political context and know it when you see it.
