According to the GOPNM's emailed press release, legislation that would allow Election Day Registration in New Mexico would actually increase the possibilities of both voter fraud and voter disenfranchisement.
However, a key component of the legislation would actually address another matter that New Mexico Republicans have been pushing when it comes to elections, Voter I.D.
A key component of Election Day Registration in other states is that voters who show up at the polls on election day to register present a valid drivers license with their current place of residence.
If this is provided, the individual is allowed to fill out the registration and cast a ballot. If the info they provided checks out, their vote is also counted.
EDR also cuts down significantly on provisional ballots, allowing people who have moved within a county to reregister and cast a vote instead of requiring they cast a provisional ballot, which has proven to be far more likely to be spoiled by precinct official error or voter error in filling out the forms.
It would seem this is an excellent opportunity for those who want all voters to be required to show i.d. before casting a vote to find a negotiate that as a primary condition of election day registration.
