Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez says that he has formed an exploratory committee to consider a campaign for governor.
Chavez, in a phone call to the Eyewitness News 4 newsroom, said that he formed the committee and is making his announcement because Lieutenant Governor Diane Denish has already declared herself to be in the race for governor and is raising campaign money.
Governor Bill Richardson, who is seeking the Democrat's nomination for president, is serving his second term as governor and cannot run for the office again.
Chavez, who is currently serving his third term as mayor, ran before for governor. He won the Democratic nomination for the office in 1998 but was defeated by incumbent governor Gary Johnson in the general election.
Chavez is the only person ever to be reelected as mayor under the city’s current form of government and the only person to serve back-to-back terms as mayor.
He is a former Westside state legislator.
