ABQjournal: County Clerk Opening Draws a Crowd:
At least four Democrats are interested in succeeding Mary Herrera as Bernalillo County clerk.Wow, it's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it.
Herrera, who won election as New Mexico secretary of state this month, will leave her job at the end of the year. County commissioners will appoint the county clerk. Those interested in the job include Kelli A. Fulgenzi, assistant city clerk for Albuquerque; Terri Holland, executive director of the county Democratic Party; Agnes Maldonado, executive director of the New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence; and Maggie Toulouse, a political consultant and Southwest regional campaign manager for the League of Conservation Voters. All are Democrats.
County Commission Chairman Alan Armijo said people interested in the job should send a résumé to the county and a letter explaining why they should get the appointment. He isn't positive about what qualifications to look for.
"Anybody can run and win and have no experience," he said. But "I imagine I would look favorably at people who have management skills or even have been involved in elections before."
Armijo said he had no preference for whether the appointee should run for election to the job or step down in 2008, when the office is due on the ballot again.
Commissioner Teresa Córdova said she hopes the appointee will be interested staying in the position for the long term.
"We're looking for someone with a lot of integrity, somebody who has a lot of good management skills," Córdova said.
Candidates from any political party can apply for the clerk's job, though Democrats comprise a majority of the County Commission.
Of the five-member commission, three are Democrats: Armijo, Córdova and Deanna Archuleta. Commissioners Tim Cummins and Michael Brasher are Republicans..
