While I still believe political parties in New Mexico have a stranglehold on our democracy in this state, the Democratic Party of New Mexico threw a bone to the election advocates seeking at least some verification of the elections results when State Party Chairman John Wertheim told reporters at this mornings press conference that "the party may request a hand tally of 2 percent of the precincts in Bernalillo County to test the accuracy of the paper ballot system used for the first time this year." He estimated that cost at between $30,000 and $50,000
Madrid concedes victory to Wilson : Election : Albuquerque Tribune.
It will be interesting to see if the State Democratic Party can seek the recount after the candidate has conceded. I thought only the candidate could file for a recount.
Also, you gotta read the article to see what Madrid says about running in 2008 or 2010.

I thought Mary Herrera said she wanted to do the 2% hand tally check anyway. If it's not really a recount, why does the Dem. party have to pay for it? Is it because it's not mandated until next year?
