The outlook amongst Democratic activists and democratic activists is gloomy with predictions that Madrid will in fact concede the election tomorrow.
For Democratic activists who had hoped to wrestle the district from incumbent Republican Heather Wilson, the narrow loss is understandably heartbreaking.
For democratic activists, the concession means the only person with standing before New Mexico courts to seek a recount has exited the stage, leaving accuracy of the election unverified statewide.
My two cents on the issue is that the outcome is less important at this point than the process by which it is determined. Madrid has a unique opportunity to actually demand a full manual recount in CD1, or at the very least demand that New Mexico state law be implemented now--that we get the audit of the tabulated results in CD 1, at least 2 percent of the precincts. Hell, Madrid could actually specify which precincts to request be hand counted so as determine if there are even any discrepencies between the machine count and the hand count.
Considering the amount of negative advertising the two campaigns subjected New Mexicans to, Madrid could at least generate some good karma by asking for the minimum level of verification from the state as to the accuracy of the machines we're likely to use in 2008. After all, Bush won the state by only 5,988 votes in 2004, 50% to Kerry's 49% and in 2000 it was Gore by only 366, 48% to 48%.
