KOBTV.com - Clovis officials troubled by proposed Superfund settlement
CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - A number of Clovis-area officials are irked by a proposed cash settlement over environmental damage at a federal Superfund site in Clovis.
A federal and state report recommends a $459,000 settlement from BNSF Railway be used to restore 43 acres at Bottomless Lakes State Park near Roswell.
Clovis City Commissioner Randy Crowder says he’s upset because the money would be spent in another community.
Republican state Senator Clint Harden of Clovis says the money should be spent in Curry County.
The railway for years had dumped wastewater into a playa about a mile south of its railroad yard in Clovis.
The US Environmental Protection Agency discovered hazardous materials, including cyanide, in and around the lake in the 1970s.
