Gov. Bill Richardson on Tuesday appointed Ernest Ortega, publicinformation officer for the Secretary of State’s Office, to fill a vacant Taos County magistrate position.
“Ernest Ortega is known for his compassion, intelligence and integrity,” Richardson said in his announcement. “I am confident that Ernest Ortega’s background and work ethic will make him an excellent magistrate judge.”
Ortega said he was “deeply humbled” by the appointment.
He is a graduate of Taos High School and The University of New Mexico. From January 1997 to December 2000, Ortega served as director of pre-trial Services for the Eighth Judicial District Attorney John Paternoster. He replaces Judge Erminio Martinez. Ortega will run for election to a full term this year.
