Polling of New Mexicans conducted between Wednesday and Friday of last week by SurveyUSA, show Sen. Domenici enjoying a 64% approval rating compared to a 59% approval rating for Jeff Bingaman, who will be seeking a fourth term to the Senate in 2006.
The polls were conducted separately, asking two groups of 600 adults only about their approval of one or the other of the state's Senators.
According to the poll, 51% of Republican respondents approve of the job Sen. Bingaman is doing while 40% of R's disapprove and 9% are unsure about the State's senior Dem.
Amongst people in his own party, Bingaman registered 72% approval and 21% disapproval with 7% saying they were unsure.
51% of Independents expressed approval for Bingaman, 39% disapproval and 11% unsure.
Senator Domenici scored higher marks across the board, broken down by party affiliation. Amongst fellow R's Domenici received 80% approval, with 14% expressing disapproval and 7% unsure.
Independents, when asked only about the job being done by Senator Domenici, gave the senator 56% approval rating, with 36% saying they disapprove and 7% saying they're unsure. Domenici even edged out Bingaman in approval from members of the opposite party, receiving 58% approval from Democrat respondents, 37% disapproval and 4% unsure.
