First off, I love Don Imus. IMUS, or the I-man, as his fans and colleagues affectionately call him, attracts a different kind of morning viewer; when every local network news channel seems to require you to endure 23 minutes of mind rotting infotainment for every 2 minutes of actual local news and 1 minute of whether and traffic, Imus offers hardcore morning grumps just what they need when they wake up; politically incorrect humor, interviews with interesting people, real questions that get real answers and opinions.
Mike Coleman captured one such exchange Imus recently had with our senior senator, Pete Domenici.
ABQJOURNAL WEBLOG: Michael Coleman Inside the Beltway:
Pete Domenici, New Mexico's senior senator, spent a few minutes chatting with Don Imus on his national radio and television show this morning but wouldn't take the bait when the radio legend asked if his Democratic political nemesis, Bill Richardson, is doing a good job.
The senator defends the president and the rationale for war in Iraq after the bit about Richardson.
Here's how the discussion went via an edited version of the transcript:
IMUS: I love him (Richardson).
DOMENICI: He's a great promoter, isn't he?
IMUS: Well, what are you saying?
DOMENICI: You know, he's a great politician, and no question about it.
IMUS : He's been great for the state of New Mexico, don't you think?
DOMENICI: Doing good. He is a master at making news, there's no question. I mean, if he were a salesman, he'd be rich.
IMUS : I'm trying to pry a compliment for him out of you but it's just not happening.
And it doesn't seem to be just Uncle Pete that's having a hard time saying anything nice about the governor's accomplishments without throwing in a dash of salt. In recent weeks, the Governor seems to have generated his own press, beginning with his book tour debut in D.C. , either preceded or proceeded by the following articles.
