Alexander Bolton of THE HILL is reporting today what everybody in New Mexico has already figured out:
“New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is pushing to increase the weight of Western states with fast-growing Hispanic populations in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary, which would give him a major advantage over other candidates vying to be the alternative to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) three years from now.”
Bolton, astutely notes that Richardson pictured here having a heart attack, has a “strong ally on the Democratic Presidential Nominating and Scheduling Commission, Michael Stratton,” who recently travelled to New Hampshire with Gov. Richardson last week.
Unlike the 2004 primaries, which was essentially determined by two consecutive wins in two of the Nation's smallest states,' Iowa and New Hampshire, a western “super primary” would put the brakes on any eastern elite candidate (i.e. Hillary) that might emerge from those states victorious.
New Hampshire doesn't need to worry about losing its prized First In the Nation Primary status, only that it'll become irrelevant.
